Worship

The College Ministry wants to make disciples that Worship Jesus out of their identity in Him.When people say the word “worship,” I sometimes think in terms of music and production. I think of the weird shows on TV called “Praiseathons” or stuff like that. Not to knock on “Praiseathons,” but singing is not the only way we Worship Jesus.  The way we think about Worship really matters.

So if I were to say “I really like the worship” at so and so church, I’m really isolating the word “worship” to something that happens on Sunday. When in fact, Worship is something we do 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

So the question is, what are we Worshiping and how?

At Mars Hill, we are constantly talking about how God initiates and how we respond. God has initiated everything in our lives, from creation to salvation, through Jesus. Our right response to Him is to Worship His son Jesus, to the praise of His glorious grace (Eph. 1:6). We were made to Worship. We were made to glorify God (Is. 43:6-7).

“All of Christian life is ceaseless worship of God, the Father, through the mediatorship of God, the Son, by the indwelling power of God, the Spirit, doing what God commands in Scripture, not doing what God forbids in Scripture, in culturally contextualized ways for the furtherance of the Gospel, when both gathered for adoration and scattered for action in joyous response to God’s glorious grace.”

-Pastor Mark Driscoll

When we stop Worshiping God, we don’t stop Worshiping. But our Worship shifts to false gods – false gods such as ourselves, creation, each other, comfort, money, success, etc. Sin is not simply disobedience –it is idolatry.

The only way to turn from idolatry is faith in the gospel, provoking repentance of our sin.

A disciple of Jesus is marked by the Worship of the true God – the putting to death of idols – out of his or her Identity in Christ.
